How does a Web Search Work?
The entire Internet consists of Websites which are composed of numerous pages called web pages. New Websites and Webpages are continuously being added to the Internet.
A search Engine first indexes billions of websites and webpages in its directory. It is able to accomplish this via “spiders” which comb the entire internet via links which connect one website/webpage to the other.
When it starts indexing the pages, then it has several parameters on which it judges a page. They would be:
- Number of Backlinks on the page which point to that webpage
- Number of pages with higher ranks that point back to that article
- If the authors of a certain blog or webpage are extremely well-known
- If the page has shown a sudden spurt in traffic due to it offering a unique proposition which other pages/sites haven’t been able to provide
- If it uses a lot many relevant keywords that are relevant to the search query (Too many repetitions of the same keyword may lead a search engine to earmark it as a spam website)
What happens when we search something on a search engine?
When we search something on the web, we are not searching the Internet, we are actually searching its Index of the Web.
As soon as we write a search term in the search bar and hit Enter, the spiders start combing the web. They do so by first searching through the initial webpages which have the exact keywords as we have used. Then it looks for more backlinks in the webpage and starts probing deeper. It checks for many factors, including whether the search query is present in the webpage URL, how many times it appears in the document or website, its authenticity, page rank and a lot of many factors.
An algorithm for allotting the different pages a page rank has been founded by Google’s Founder Lawrence Page, which uses more than 100 different parameters to rank nodes (websites) in a linked database (World Wide Web). The Patent for the algorithm can be accessed here.
Since a search engine has already indexed a huge chunk of the Internet and it uses special algorithms like MapReduce and PageRank, hence the searches are lightning fast and we can search the Internet (or a search engine’s version of the Internet) in a fraction of a second.
How does SEO work by Optimizing Page Rank?
Every website owner would want his/her website to be ranked the highest in his/her category. So, they would want that their page appears the first in the Search results. Optimizing the searchability of our website so that it appears on top of the search results is the goal of Search Engine Optimization. Let’s see a few ways in which it can be done:
- Using the Yoast SEO Plugin while Designing web pages using WordPress
Websites are generally designed using a Content Management System like Drupal, Joomla! Prestashop and WordPress.
Using an SEO Plugin like Yoast for WordPress can help a lot in optimizing the searchability of our Web Pages which can, in turn, increase our page rank. It continuously shows its suggestions for our website which we can incorporate to make it rank higher on the search results.
- By adding the Appropriate Slug and Meta Description
The slug is that part of the URL which identifies our web page.
The Meta Description of a Web Page basically is a short summary of the webpage.
The Spiders or the web search bots first search for the keyword in the slug and Meta Description and then search the document if they are relevant enough. So, these are critically important for the page to be ranked higher.
- The Alt attributes of an Image
If we have an image on our website, the spiders won’t search the image. They will search its Alt Attribute which basically describes the image. So, it is also important for a page to have Alt attributes for all images.
- Relevancy of Content
The content should be related to the topic, with relevant keywords spaced at appropriate intervals which will increase its page rank. The more the relevant keywords the more a search engine can connect it to the relevant Backlinks and hence better are the rankings.
Today, search engines index thousands of websites each day as more content is added to the internet. Hence any e-commerce, online marketplace, blog or any website looking to attract higher internet traffic should skillfully use the SEO tactics to increase its visibility on the World Wide Web.
